In 1850, California wanted to be admitted as a state. This was known as "The Compromise of 1850". This would have uneven the ratio of free to slave states. This resulted in California being a free state, Texas gave up land for the price ten million U.S. dollar, slavery was abolished in Washington, D.C. , and The Fugitive Slave Act was passed. The Compromise of 1850 wasn't the only important event during 1850. The Fugitive Slave Act was also put into action. The Fugitive slave Act was an act passed stating that citizens must aid and house fugitive slaves. This angered some Northerners because they did not wish to house and aid fugitive slaves. Slaves were also denied a jury. Last but not least the Georgia Platform. The Georgia Platform consisted of the North accepting the Fugitive Slave Act. The Act also stated that the North cannot ban slavery in new states. Anything else this endorsement of the Compromise of 1850 temporarily halted the movement for immediate secession throughout the South.
